The City of Cape Town has issued an urgent call for residents in several southern and western suburbs to reduce their water consumption while emergency repairs are underway on a major pipeline in Claremont, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The City’s Water and Sanitation team began attending to repairs on an 810mm-diameter pipeline on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, at around 10am.
The work is affecting water supply to a number of service reservoirs supplying areas stretching from Claremont towards Ottery, Muizenberg, Hout Bay, Constantia and surrounding suburbs.
Areas affected
Residents in Wynberg, Ottery, Southfield, Fairways, Retreat, Westlake, Bergvliet, Kirstenhof, Lakeside, Muizenberg, Hout Bay, Plumstead, Tokai, Constantia, Mount Rhodes and Llandudno, as well as surrounding areas, may experience reduced water pressure or interruptions.
The affected service reservoirs are currently under strain as the repair work continues.
The maintenance team is working to complete the repairs and restore water supply to the reservoirs as quickly as possible. However, residents are warned that the reservoirs will need additional time to recover to normal operating levels once the pipeline repairs have been completed.

The City is asking residents in the affected areas to urgently reduce their water consumption to help preserve the available supply while the system stabilises.
Residents are advised to use water for essential purposes only and avoid activities such as filling swimming pools, watering gardens, washing vehicles and other non-essential consumption until the situation improves.
The City has apologised for the inconvenience and said maintaining its water infrastructure is necessary to ensure a reliable water supply for consumers.
